Many people have mixed cultural backgrounds and can share in more than one ethnicity. In other words, nationality means the identity of a large group of people having a legal connection and personal allegiance to a specific place, because of being born there. In a article, Troy Duster outlines how contemporary technology allows the tracing of ancestral lineage but along only the lines of one maternal and one paternal line. Thought-provoking and penetrating, Yellow tears down stereotypes and leaves in their place a model for racial progress.

Another way to look at the difference is to consider people who share the same ethnicity. Another reason to question the biological concept of race is that an individual or a group of individuals is often assigned to a race arbitrarily. Drawing from his own experiences as a black man in America, Coates explores the country's fraught past and divisive present in an attempt to shed a light on creating a brighter future. With such arbitrary designations, race is more of a social category than a biological one. What do you mean by that and why do you think that is so?

Related Differences. Since then, other analyses have found FST values of 6—10 percent between continental human groups, 5—15 percent between different populations on the same continent and 75—85 percent within populations. That is, we are constantly orienting to race while at the same time denying the overwhelming evidence that shows the myriad ways that American society is fundamentally structured by it. While Italian-Americans are thought of as an ethnic group in the United States, some Italians identify more with their regional origins than their national ones. President Barack Obama had an African father and a white mother. A racist believes that certain people are superior, or inferior, to others in light of racial differences.

Drawing from his own experiences as white man, Wise looks at how whiteness shapes his daily life, from his education and housing to his employment and economic status, while exposing the ways in which it hurts people of color. Philosophers such as Joshua Glasgow and Naomi Zack believe that US racial groups cannot be defined by visible traits, such as skin colour and physical attributes: "The ancestral genetic tracking material has no effect on phenotypes, or biological traits of organisms, which would include the traits deemed racial, because the ancestral tracking genetic material plays no role in the production of proteindit is not the kind of material that 'codes' for protein production.

In the South during the time of slavery, the skin tone of slaves lightened over the years as babies were born from the union, often in the form of rape, of slave owners and other whites with slaves.

For example, a Japanese-American would probably consider herself a member of the Japanese or Asian race, but, if she doesn't engage in any practices or customs of her ancestors, she might not identify with the ethnicity, instead considering herself an American. It is also compatible with our finding that, even when the most distinct populations are considered and hundreds of loci are used, individuals are frequently more similar to members of other populations than to members of their own population".

The same can be said of the ethic diversity of the former Soviet Union with its more than ethnic groups, some having more than a million members. Just as in the United States, a good deal of interracial reproduction has occurred since those early days, much of it initially the result of rape of women slaves by their owners, and Brazil over the centuries has had many more racial intermarriages than the United States.
